Dental Residency Program
Advanced Education in General Dentistry
The Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residency (AEGD) is a 12-Month Program (MP) located at the Fort Jackson Dental Health Activity (DENTAC) throughout the four primary dental clinics (Hagen, Caldwell, Oliver, OMS-Moncrief). The program provides professional post-doctoral training, encompassing supervised clinical and academic experiences in all dental specialties through the expertise of board-certified mentors. The purpose of the AEGD 12-MP is to prepare efficient independent clinicians; thereby creating standalone competent dentists that will excel in the complex multi-disciplinary treatment needs of a diverse patient population, even in potentially austere environments.
The AEGD 12-MP allows for a multitude of extracurricular, community service, and Continuing Education (CE) opportunities. The Hinman Dental Meeting, Periodontic/Prosthodontic/Endodontic CE short course, Children’s dental health month, and oral cancer screenings for military retirees are some examples of events available through the program. Close proximity to dental specialty residency programs at Fort Bragg and Fort Gordon allows for easy access to specialty externships. The AEGD 12-MP not only stewards clinical and didactic dental training, but also fosters Officer Professional Development in military history, leadership, and tactical medical training. Combat Causality Care Course (C4), Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS), and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) are some examples. Participation in the AEGD 12-MP represents an exceptional opportunity for the recent Dental School graduate to develop both as a Dental Officer and Dental Professional in the United States Army Dental Corps.
Upon graduation from the AEGD 12-MP, officers are awarded certificates of graduation, a military occupational specialty designation signifying an additional year of post-graduate training, additional credentials for advanced dental procedures, and 150 CE hours by the Academy of General Dentistry towards a Fellowship/Mastership.
